Criticism of ‘rosy view’ of Alderney’s financial position
Thursday 20th October 2011, 2:29PM BST.
ALDERNEY’S 2012 budget was criticised at yesterday’s States meeting.
Paul Arditti attacked Policy and Finance Committee chairman John Beaman for painting a bright economic picture.
In his report, Mr Beaman said increased property sales and air passengers were helping the economy.
Mr Arditti (pictured) said: ‘Mr Beaman’s views are not my views and I wonder whether they are the views of the other members.’

I thought the problem was reduced air passengers? That’s what I thought I read in the Alderney Journal.

Arditti is correct. There are fewer passengers and fewer people buying property.
And the future will be worse unless they do something to improve access to the island. Less costly flights, more of them, and a low cost ferry. And until that is sorted out we are wasting time and money on advertising and selling the island to potential new residents and businesses.
The Scillies have done it – why not Alderney?

the scillies have done it,have they. THE AIRFARES ARE EVEN HIGHER THERE BECAUSE THATS WHAT IT COSTS TO OPPERATE, ferries arent cheap but work if enough people are traveling. alderney is too small to make that work.THE FERRY THERE IS ISLAND OWNED, AS IS THE AIRLINE, WHERE IS THE BUINESS SUPPORT here , the scillies are just off the coast of englands buisiest holliday area, alderney is in the middle of nowhere ,many scillies visitors are day trippers on holiday in cornwall, we havent got that opption here and if we did the shops would shut when they arived . WHAT IS THERE HERE FOR THE VISITORS , even when we have a small ferry they allow a french competitor to land passengers for free and moor for the day whilst the local boat has to pay in france funnily enough about the same amount the french undercut the local boat .fuel costs have rissen rapidly local taxes on flights are high.the caa/easa regulations keep getting changed costing more and more.
basicaly its time people woke up stoped whining and got on with life,no one owes you subsidised flights ferries etc if you dont like paying so the services yes services NO REAL PROFIT can continue to opperate then do us a favour and leave.
