Teachers’ union warns over Education budget savings
Saturday 29th October 2011, 2:30PM BST.
EDUCATION cannot afford to cut teaching provision and support for children in an effort to make £1.63m. in savings, a teachers’ union has warned.
The comments from secretary of the Guernsey branch of the NASUWT Caroline Bowker (pictured) followed the news that States departments could receive £6.5m. less next year compared to 2011.
And a major chunk of that figure will have to come from just two departments – Health and Social Services, which is set to lose £2.35m, and Education.
The announcement comes at a time when the department’s services will come under review following the recent GSCE results saga.

Well said Caroline.
The Education Board could easily save £1.6M at a stroke by sacking their senior management team and associated hangers-on. No one else would notice, least of all those of us in the classrooms. Then start on the Guille-Allez library (which Education pays for.) Don’t get me wrong, I love libraries, but how many people does it take to change a library book? Go in there and count how many staff are just sitting around waiting for something to happen…..

Grumpy Teacher.
If the administrative management of education at the Grange were paid by results what would the cost be?
£16 pounds would be too much? What say you?

That would be the same Caroline Bowker whose very own maths department produced such abysmal results that the whole school percentage pass rate was devalued.
Joined by “maths trained” Grumpy Teacher.
Perhaps they would both be better employed putting their energies into teaching the island’s children adequately rather than boring the Bailiwick senseless with their interminable bleatings.

Remove the completely indulgent Music Service, that saves £700,000 at a stroke.

How many pen pushers are there in the Education Department’s admin system? How many Deputies meddling?
The UK is steering away from centralised admin for education and allocating budgets to schools. They now have their ‘free schools’ who I’m sure don’t have an Admin Block full of civil servants.
The UK public schools seem to manage with a Burser and a couple of assistants for the day to day and school governors (unpaid usually) for the financial oversight. The Head and their team run the educational policies for the school.
Allocate a sum of money to each pupil and our Guernsey and Alderney schools can manage their own budgets, policies etc.. I bet we see some results then.

Trust Hello to bring a touch of sanity to the table. Well done. But far too practical. Remember where you are, sir.
