A TEENAGE cyclist had a lucky escape after what police described as a serious accident on Saturday morning left his bike crumpled.
When officers first attended the Rohais incident at about 7.55am, they believed the 18-year-old had life-threatening injuries. However, they were not as bad as first feared and the young man was discharged from hospital late on Saturday afternoon.
Police and the Ambulance and Rescue Service were called to attend the crash at the Collings Road/Rohais traffic lights.
It is believed the male on a red bicycle was travelling down the road but did not see a silver Toyota that was stopped at the traffic lights.

Glad the rider is ok – perhaps a visit to the opticians would be in order!!
Also, I assume the police deployed the armed BMW response units if the incident was initially believed to be serious

Yes they did deploy the armed cars, and they also closed the whole of the Rohais, Collings Road and Rocquaine Coast Road!

And most likely gets off scott free, leaving the car owner to pay for repairs out of their own pocket as cyclists are not required to have insurance.
yep, exactly the same as if a person wheeling a supermarket trolley hits your car. maybe they should have insurance too?

As a cyclist that has suffered at the hands of an at-fault car driver, this comment appears to be a little unfortunate.
Without the muscle of an insurance company behind you it is difficult to chase for compensation due by an errant car driver, even if the police reports are in the cyclist’s favour.
Just for the record, most of my road journeys are by car.

Speaking as a (solvent) cyclist who has damaged a car, I can assure you that not having insurance does not absolve liability.
And yes, it does grate that this remains the case even though you can buy bicycles for an entire family with the money it takes to fix a single dent in a car panel.
