Decision to close hedgehog centre ‘heartbreaking’

Tuesday 15th November 2011, 2:29PM GMT.

A LACK of volunteers has forced the closure of the Guernsey Hedgehog Rescue Centre.

Founder Dawn Robin said the decision had been hard, but she could not continue.

‘It was very heartbreaking, especially when the volunteers found out,’ she said. ‘People have been shocked.’

About 14 volunteers help clean out hutches at the shelter. But with three needing to retire due to illness or other commitments, Mrs Robin decided it was time to close.

It will continue caring for the 55 animals already in its care and they will be released in the spring. But any newly injured hedgehogs will now go to the GSPCA.

Can’t blame the lady for finally calling it a day

She and her band of volunteers must have put thousands of unpaid hours into this project

I wonder how many hedgehogs have passed through her care in that time… must also be in the thousands?
