‘Islands must fight unlawful scrapping of the VAT relief’

SCRAPPING a relief that allowed goods under £15 to be sent to the UK from the Channel Islands VAT free was totally unlawful and discriminatory, the general manager of Ferryspeed Guernsey has said.

And Martyn Langlois (pictured) called on both Guernsey and Jersey governments to join together to fight back against the UK’s decision.

‘There is a lot at stake here, both for the community and for businesses in general,’ he said.

‘If this was the finance industry the government would be spending millions protecting it.’

Good luck. You’ll need to sell a few ferries to fund that one. EU has deep pockets.

Though I don’t believe we could or should contest the scrapping of the Vat relief if it was for all jurisdictions.

It cannot be legal for the UK to apply this to the Channel Islands alone.

I fully agree with you. The move is clear discrimination against the Islands…just read what UK residents have to say…

How is it discrimination to prevent goods being shipped out of the UK and back again via the Channel Islands? This concession was never meant for this purpose and was in reality allowed for small goods to be exported from overseas suppliers to the UK VAT free.
Derek Coates and Martyn Langlois know this but like to exploit a tax loophole for their own benefit.

I do feel sorry the very few remaining Guernsey Growers, but again I don not feel sorry for those that ship flowers in from South America and then export them to the UK as Flowers from Guernsey. Another big con.
Where is the good old Guernsey morals and values? Perhaps they only exist for the benefit of the ‘Guerns’ and sod everyone else.

The UK is being petty and vindictive but they are entitled to withdraw tax concessions and there is nothing Guernsey can do about it.

Yes appears to be a discrimination factor involved. But maybe the CI could join forces and fight for locally produced products to be exempt from proposed ban?

BTW maybe us Islanders should ban incoming goods that disguise the VAT charged too!
