Firefighters raise the car for the man to be treated. (1198872)
AN ELDERLY man was trapped under a car for about 45 minutes yesterday when he was run over after shopping at Alliance.
The 76-year-old was taken to hospital with suspected fractured legs after a blue Suzuki Alto, driven by an elderly female, struck him on the pavement outside the supermarket’s doors shortly before 10am.
It is understood the man was just a few metres from his own vehicle when he was struck.
He remained in hospital last night, where he will undergo surgery on his serious leg injuries, police confirmed.

Yet another example why elderly people should either be retested or taken off the roads…
The ‘elderly woman’ was actually in her 90′s…. is there really any need for someone of this age to be in control of a potential killing machine???
How long before people act???
Hang on – I know… when its a child or a pram that gets knocked over & probably killed…
States of Guernsey – Prevention is the best cure – DO NOT wait for a death before growing a set & making a law change…

What age would you suggest it would be mandatory then? 65? 70? 80?
I know 70/80 year olds that drive better than people 20-30 years their junior!
I agree that a test should be brought in but the issue is that just because someone is old doesn’t mean they are automatically a danger on the roads.
Surely by the same token someone could point out that the driver was a woman? Would people say this should make a difference? I know some absolutely appalling women drivers, but I also know some that are far more proficient than I.
Personally I think anyone from overseas (UK mainland included) should have to take a small test as there are far too many people who don’t understand simple things like giving way to the right or filter in turn!
Oh, and there are also things called accidents, these do happen I’m told.

How old are these people who are suggesting the elderly should be taken off the road?.
Bet they feel different when THEY are the elderly,
I agree most of the elderly drive much more skillfully than the under 30′s

It’s not like if they get taken off the road they can’t go anywhere. There’s always the very regular and reliable Bus service on the Island.
Oh,wait,hang on a minute……

For the sake of everyone is it not time the requirement to take a second driving test at a certain age was made mandatory.
Make the test free and not a full test but sufficient to gauge the drivers hand eye coordination, road awareness and perception of distance and speed.

Exactly, it doesnt have to be a full test, literally 10-15 minutes to gauge the persons competence and see if there are any major factors that could cause accidents in the future. Abd if there are factors such as poor reaction times then giving the driver pointers on how to amend their driving to make them safer.
But I would suggest an admin fee to cover the cost because examiners dont come for free.
When to start it is the big question.
There are many drivers on the island young and old who you can see have dangerous habits, but you have to balance the benefits with the logistics involved in having to check an island full of people.

Also include in the test a minimum height requirement for the vehicle being driven.
I suspect that they probably couldn’t see over the steering wheel.

now would be a good time to change the law!!!! that,s my uncle under that car and its our family that will suffer. some one should act now before someone is killed…
Report abuse
What else do you need? Will it take a child to be killed before you act? What if a precious deputy were to be harmed? This has gone beyond a joke now – there needs to be an immediate re-testing policy put in place. Rush it through the states, hold an emergency meeting now. These OAP’s are unleashed killers – get them off the streets.
And while you’re at it – try your very hardest to sort out the incredible traffic problem on this island.

Simple…BAN cars and just have Buses,Bicycles and Motorbikes.
From a 1000cc Biker and very frequent “Inside of helmet swearer at the amount of flaming idiot 4 wheel drivers”
Just to let you know I’m adding a bike cam to my bike so I can record all of the idiot drivers out there. Anyone decides they’re going to pull out on me without looking, cut in front of me in heavy traffic,text/talk on their mobile phone and drive UNDER the speed limit or even so as to be driving dangerously then I’m heading straight down the Police station with video evidence…..so BE WARNED.

This is a tragic situation and a regular re-test regime would be a good idea. Say, every 10 years but this ageist histeria is undesirable in our society. As indeed is any form of discrimination. In 2005 a 17 year old driver killed a 16 year old on Fort Road. He presumably was a teenage “unleashed killer”? What punishment should such a person receive?
Society has a right to have protection from criminal activities and build a framework of costs for those who transgress. But to arbitrarily withdraw a driving licence because one reaches a “certain age” is wrong. This is a competency issue which should have nothing to do with age. A court, if it so desires, should be able to order any driver to re-sit their test as part of the punishment for those found guilty.

I don’t think the 16 year old was killed, just badly maimed. Did the driver not kill himself afterwards?

Sad for both involved in this incident. Just goes to show that we need delivery shopping and kerbside recycling!

Jeff, you are wrong when you state that U.K. drivers are not familiar with giving priority to traffic approaching from the right. This always applies in the U.K at roundabouts and when joining motorways and would form part of the driving test. It also applies when we drive in the U.S.A except it becomes priority to the left.
I actually said retested or banned… meaning if they refuse the re-test or fail it then they have their licence taken away…
Of course young people crash as well, but there is a reason we dont allow 14 year olds to drive cars – because they are too young & dont have the ability – much the same as a number of elderly drivers – they dont have the reactions that they used to!
I am not ‘ageist’ – far from it, my grandfather had his licence taken away much to his dismay earlier this year & I can tell you the family were secretly jumping through hoops as we knew he shouldnt have been driving & he is in his eighties…
I heard on the news today that an elderly lady was taken on a spinal board to hospital after rolling her car…
So for all of the people trying to argue with me that we should let people incapeable of driving safely, please tell me why over 70% of accidents on Guernsey roads involve drivers over 65?
I think everybody should be retested every six years as people get complacent and aquire bad driving attitudes.
I found it quite funny that someone in a Guernsey post should make the statement that people from the UK do not understanding about giving way to vehicals from the right when the majority of Guernsey drivers will tell you that they don’t have to drive around a roundabout when they cut across one and cut you off.

Drivers should take a written exan and test every ten years, problem solved
