TOWN traders are being encouraged to be proactive in the battle against shoplifting in the run up to Christmas.

Police gave a presentation to shopkeepers in which they highlighted how traders could help protect themselves from theft over the festive period.

‘We are mindful that it’s the busiest time for shops, shoppers and the opportunists,’ said neighbourhood policing co-ordinator Sergeant Amanda Randall.

‘We want to reassure traders that we are there to help, and work with them to deter the criminal element.’

Police will have a more visible presence in the Town over Christmas and plain clothes officers will be out and about, too.
