PRESSURE is mounting on politicians to withdraw a proposal that would allow Guernsey Dairy to deal directly with shops.

After writing to customers asking them to petition their politicians, milk retailers last night begged deputies at a presentation at Les Cotils to reject Commerce and Employment’s review of the dairy industry.

In its letter to islanders, the Guernsey Milk Retailers’ Association described the proposals, which discuss changes to distribution arrangements, as dangerous and lacking in evidence.

And, after last night’s meeting, deputies said the claim had not fallen on deaf ears.

The retailers have been milking it for decades. The present crazy system is loaded in favour of their cosy supply monopoly. It’s plainly ridiculous that our States owned dairy is not able to supply direct to the major supermarkets. Listen to the farmers, not the retailers, and pass the proposals as they stand.

Dear martino. You are forgetting one major piece of the puzzle. Milk retailers each purchased a license when spending many tens of thousands of pounds buying their rounds to sell milk in their designated zone. This license was issued by the States of Guernsey. In short, we bought the rights to deliver to our customers who are in our zones. It is not for the dairy or the states of guernsey to now “cherry pick” OUR customers just because its easy money for them. Prior to 2003, each milk round had to supply over 100 doorsteps before it was allowed to deliver to a shop. Each year a contract was signed by all retailers but in 2003 the dairy had a contract drawn up which was basically unworkable and so was withdrawn by the dairy and no new contract has been produced since. You are obviously not aware of the facts of the goings on of the last decade so are not really in a place to make any intelligent suggestions. I suggest you research the whole case for at least the last 6 years and then make an educated response rather than just dribble.

On the contrary mr milkman I am fully aware of the details of your cosy licensing arrangement, which is a throwback to the days when most people did have their milk delivered.
In the 21st century, however, most milk is despatched to large shops and you receive a huge amount of money for making a few simple drops that take minutes and that could be done by the States Dairy for a fraction of the cost.
In other words your cosy arrangement is stifling the present and future profitability of our entire dairy industry. When this ridiculous situation is ended you will be more than adequately compensated for losing your lucrative monopoly, which makes no business sense whatsoever to the rest of us in this day and age.

Martino. It is obvious that trying to talk common sense and logic to you is a waste of time as you are one of these people who knows absolutely everything, well at least thinks he does but actually knows pretty much nothing about anything. If you know so much about my business, you tell me what I receive in monetary value for delivering 100 litres of milk to “A Shop”. Lets see how clever you think you really are. And also, if we have it “so cushy” why haven’t you gone out and spend £100,000 on buying a milk round and giving yourself such an easy lifestyle ?
