£10m. provision for States workers’ wage rises

PAY rises for States staff could total nearly £10m. over the next two years, latest figures have revealed.

The 2012 Budget showed £4.7m. from the reserves has been allocated to fund next year’s pay rises, which are yet to be negotiated.

And £6m. was set aside to pay for this year’s increases.

‘However, pay awards have generally been lower than the 3.5% allowance and hence £1m. of the pay award portion of the reserve will not be required,’ said Treasury minister Charles Parkinson (pictured), in the budget report.

The £9.7m. total equates to £231 for each of Guernsey’s 42,000 taxpayers.

I like the way that there is the assumption that there will be pay rises for the States staff. Some folk aren’t so lucky, even in the private sector. Maybe they should have a pay freeze and donate the savings to the next major project overspend!

    Folkie,

If States staff are so lucky why not go and join them?

Would you miss your free tea/coffee, health care, christmas meal/bonus, cheaper travel, cheaper loans/mortgage, annual bonus, company car or any of the other perks that are to be found in many private sector companies?

    • Folkie

You must be stuck in a time warp – the current so called perks extended to free tea/coffee and occasionally an annual bonus, if you really busted a gut throughout the year. Free healthcare, Christmas bonus, cheaper travel, loans, mortgage etc? Keep dreaming.

Free tea/coffee is still 100% more than I get as a States employee, and whats an occasional annual bonus?

Certainly something thats mainly exclusive to the finance industry, I’ve had a few jobs in the past and thats something that I’ve never been fortunate enough to receive.

Kevin, are you joking, I’m in the private sector i get free coffee and…erm…nope that’s it. And i don’t even like coffee.

I enjoy my job so i’m lucky in that respect.

Kevin, what are you talking about. That happened about 20yrs ago not now. I work in the private sector and I get nothing. Free tea and coffee, no loans, company car, bonus and certainly no pension. I will live on the miserly states pension while part of my tax is used to pay the States Employees their top up pension! Unbelievably! Health care forget that. Thas has been phased out in a lot of companies and as for mortgage payments. You are going back to the ninetees Kevin and you seem stuck there. Personally I should apply for a States job which is for life with a pension at the end. Doesn’t matter if I am that intelligent or not as I probably do fit their criteria (favourite work that they use in interviews)! That is a fact.

“Doesn’t matter if I am that intelligent or not as I probably do fit their criteria”

Inferring less intelligent people work in the public sector?

“I should apply for a States job which is for life with a pension at the end. I work in the private sector and I get nothing”

Mmmmm, who are the intelligent ones now?

Well why don’t you apply for a job with the States then you can have the massive pension in 30 years time (assuming you don’t pop your clogs before you reach the ever increasing retirement age)

In the meantime the States will take back a compulsory 6.5% of your hard earned cash to keep the pension pot topped up.

Personally I would find that money much more useful now in the current economic situation.

So there you are, we get absolutely nothing -no free tea/coffee AND we have to give part of our wages back!

If I was intelligent enough I’d get a job in the private sector but the States have employed me so I must be stupid and lazy.

And how much is earmarked for Deputies pay ?

Or are they shifting to a performance related system and therefore receiving a cut ?

Kevin, and you think that 6.5% of your salary buys an index linked, final salary pension?

    Thats Greek thinking that is

    • kevin

No I don’t think that at all, I know it costs the taxpayer as well, what I would say is that I (along with many others on low incomes) are finding things pretty tough at the moment and that 6.5% would be far more useful now than in 30 years time assuming I live that long!

Deputies used to give their services free..its since they have been paid that the island has got into this mess. Deputies are only into this because of the money, to get the salary that they are paid in the private sector, they would need qualifications, any village idiot can be elected thse days, and they usually are !

    David,

I’m no great fan of many of our deputies ( with maybe half a dozen exceptions) but you are being rather unfair.

I don’t know exactly how much the deputies get paid (around £25k I think)but I’m sure that there is people out there that would stand for election, in order to do it properly I would have thought it needs to be your only job and this probably puts a lot of maybe better qualified people off standing for election as they can earn considerably more in a normal job for a lot less hassle!

As you seem confident that the States is full of village idiots I assume you will be standing in the next election?

They could always use one more!

This is nonsense several deputies joined the States long before they were paid a salary, I was one of them and I can tell you now I earned a lot more in the Plant Hire business than I do as a deputy. You also have to remember that the payment deputies receive also includes expenses for office supplies, phone calls, postage etc.

When you say that they used to work for free, that kind of depends on your point of view. Several of the “old school” politicians were presidents of boards at the same time as supplying goods and/or services to the states on a very large scale. Numerous others were acting in a similar way but on a smaller scale and maybe a bit more “arm’s length”.

So one way or another they were benefiting from their office as deputy, and by a far bigger sum than the relatively modest salary now on offer.

      Phil,

The island is that small that you would be hard pushed to find any politician that won’t benefit or have some sort of vested interest either for themselves or through their family or friends.

I’m sure that this money is also meant for nurses, fire fighters, police etc. and therefore I think that DELLQUAY’s comments are completely unjustified as I’m sure that mostly intelligent people are employed in those sectors.

I’m sick of people bashing those that work for the States, obviously times have changed within the Private Sector, do you not think that they have changed in the Civil Service during that time? I think that they have, its not how it used to be 20 years ago!
