Kennel cough calls halt on dog events
Thursday 24th November 2011, 2:29PM GMT.
KENNEL cough has closed down local dog activities.
The infection of the upper respiratory system is highly contagious to canines and has been recorded in at least several dozen animals in the island. As a result, the two main dog organisations have decided to cancel their activities as a precaution.
Guernsey Island Dog Training Club on Collings Road has closed for at least another week.
President Karen Seward (pictured) said they were following their vet’s advice.
‘Kennel cough is not a huge problem but by closing down it will stop it from spreading,’ she said.

I’d like to thank everyone who knew about this and didn’t think that a general warning to dog owners was warranted until Wed. 23rd. Have just come back from the vet with a coughing puppy that we should have been keeping away from other dogs as a precaution for the last TWO WEEKS. Even listening to Radio Guernsey Thursday morning trying to get a statement from the States Vet so that we can have a bit of professional information – he didn’t want to say anything – why on earth not? Just left to a spokesperson from the Dog Club who told us to keep our dogs away from non family dogs (- but for how long?). She may not be a professional vet but at least she is out there with some advice. Good on her.
