PET shops have defended their animal welfare records, after the GSPCA told islanders not to buy from them.

Shelter manager Steve Byrne said earlier this week that islanders should not buy animals from pet shops, the internet or puppy farms as it was hard to prove the pets had been treated correctly.

But two pet retailers have said their animals were always given adequate space, care and privacy.

Trim Dog Pet Centre sells small animals such as rabbits, hamsters and cockatiels.

Owner Jan Olliver was concerned about the GSPCA’s advice.

I can certainly understand the principle behind this advice and agree 100% about puppy farms. I wonder though, does this advice extend to rescue centres? Many of the animals are there for the very reasons we’re advised not to buy from pet shops.
If an animal has been mistreated or abandoned, providing it’s deemed safe, surely it’s better to be given a decent home than left in a cage somewhere? We got our dog from a rescue centre in Wales – we had no real proof about her history apart from the word of the rescue centre. Were we wrong, GSPCA?

I don’t think condemning all pet shops is good. After all, who’s to say a private breeder treats their animals any better?

Rather than making blanket statements, shouldn’t the advice be to conduct due diligence on ALL breeders / shops before parting with your money?

I’ve had a number of small animals (Hamsters, Guinea Pigs, Rabbits) from Trim Dog over the years, every one has been Healthy, in good condition, very placid with no behaivoural problems, enjoyed being handled and all lived long lives.

Contrast that to some guinea pigs bought from a leading member of guernsey rabbit & cavy club, which tried to bite the handler every time they were picked up, and had to be seperated because they try to kill each other.

    Great advice GSPCA!!
