A CONVENIENCE store, which has been open since the 1960s, has become one of the many empty shops in the Old Quarter of Town.
Victoria Road Stores is the latest independent shop to close, with one resident saying it was a sign of the times.
And Audiovision retail manager Mark Renouf said many of the shops along the road were now empty.
‘That shop, where Equine Essentials was last, has seen a lot of tenants come and go after a short period,’ he said.
‘I think if you walk from here down into Town there are probably as many empty shops in the Old Quarter as there are occupied ones.’

The exodus is starting to bite.

Its not the rent that is the problem. This area suffers big time with parking issues. If there is no where to park then people will not stop to shop.
There are several developments going on in the area that will provide another 14 or so flats. This will just compound the issue as more residents more cars.
As it is, people park in the un/loading bays and block genuine people from using them to go into the shops. More needs to be done to create a suitable solution to help inject some life back into the area.

Another independent shop to close. Soon the island will be one big monopoly if we are not already there. Don’t be fooled just because some companies have different names does not mean they are not owned by the same corporation.

An ugly part of the island one would suggest. Many would like to see the whole area redeveloped, maybe turned into out of town parking for our heroic finance workforce, those that keep this island buoyant.
