Bus drivers considering early departure

BUS drivers are considering whether to bite the bullet and leave their job instead of waiting for Environment to decide their fate, the Guernsey Press can reveal.

Out of 90 Island Coachways’ employees, 50 face redundancy at the end of March unless the department can find a way to continue the island’s bus service.

Their jobs were thrown into doubt when it was revealed that negotiations between the company and Environment to renew its contract had broken down irretrievably.

The department yesterday refused to give an update of its progress on finding a replacement operator or divulge what options it had considered.

When approached by the Guernsey Press, one driver confirmed that some of his colleagues might not wait around to discover whether they had a future with another operator.

And who can blame them…no one likes living with uncertainty and the drivers and staff have rent, mortgages loans and whatever to pay each month.
