ILLEGAL snares were being sold by a local shop until yesterday, Guernsey Police have confirmed.

The news comes just a week after the Guernsey Press highlighted the danger the traps, often aimed at rabbits, could pose to cats.

The Survival Tin, which was sold by Millets, contains a length of slim metal, identified as snare wire on the packaging.

Inspector Trevor Coleman said the force was aware of the kits and the illegal snares.

‘The shop has been advised accordingly and the items have been withdrawn from sale,’ he said.

Why??…….. It’s a “Survival Tin” for crying out loud, to help you survive in an emergency. The reason it won’t have proper snare wire in it is because its to thick to fit in to a “Survival Tin” ….This is PC gone mad.

Absolutely nuts. You don’t have to have “special snare wire” to make snares.

Like my better known cousin I’ve survived the jungle of Beleize, trekked across the Atacama desert and caught small mammals in the Rockies. I don’t stand a chance in Guernsey though, I can’t buy the kit I need! Seriously, one more step too far…..

    That’s not a snare, it’s a coil of wire.

Have all the strings on my guitar just become illegal?

I don’t see any reason to sell these in Guernsey. As far as I am aware nobody here has to fight for survival, selling these will only lead to cruel and unneccessary animal deaths. Can this snare differentiate between a rat, a cat or a small child? Anybody desperate for one of these kits can buy it elsewhere.

Kerry -We’re not talking about snares being used in Guernsey to catch rabbits
And Yes I agree they are cruel things – But Its about a Travel Survival kit from an outdoor adventure company Millets, people that shop there don’t just go to Benidorm for their holidays…. So it could be an essential piece of kit.

And don’t forget the damage you and your kids cat is doing to the wild life population right in your own back garden……I bet your cat brings you presents like dead rabbits and birds!

    How cute is that?

You don’t need any special wire to make these. Fishing trace wire and a tent peg is just as good. I have a dozen placed strategically around my back yard to keep the cats away from my hens. A few hours spent snared is more than enough to make the same cat think twice about entering my yard to poo everywhere or wind up the hens. If they get past my dog that is.

My neighbours’ cats keep messing up my lawn, a bit of snare wire could be just the solution I need to stop it happening. That or a pellet or two, there’ll be a couple more in kitty heaven soon…………..

Apparently in a dawn raid ( with the full armoured reponse unit ) Le Friquet had all their spades confiscated because they too can be used for killing rabbits ( and other small mammals as well … )

Kendall Guitars and Musique have removed all stocks of coiled instrument strings from their shelves.

And washing lines across the island are under attack as well …. and heaven forbid anybody tries to hang a picture anywhere …
