HSSD says Budget cuts are too hard to handle

HEALTH and Social Services has placed an amendment to the 2012 Budget, to prevent its spending being slashed by more than £2m. next year.

The States-wide efficiency drive had asked it to cut £2.35m., but the department thinks this is a step too far, saying it has already delivered £6.1m-worth of savings during 2011 that have been included in the original Budget proposal.

It has asked Treasury and Resources to reinstate £1.35m. of its cash limit reduction, but said it could achieve the remaining £1m.-worth of efficiencies needed.

Minister Hunter Adam (pictured) was unavailable for comment, but his deputy, Peter Gillson, said the department had been given only six weeks’ notice to establish where it could save the extra cash and the savings already implemented needed time to bed down.

    Good idea Martino,
They could sell two armed response and an armoured vehicle with low milage on the clock.
Guernsey people could then be safer.
They`d get a good price from the Kabul police I`m sure.

Better still, stop wasting money and start economising! Why can’t they do as they are asked?

I’d love to see HSSD’s hospitality (staff and executive) budget, the overseas conference budget and work out how efficieny of the contract with the Medical Specialist Group.

Of course without a Freedom of Information law we’ll never find out where HSSD are wasting all their tax payers cash.

I think the Minister should focus on what is going on. Last week, the Hospital had a patients family buying Soya Milk from the Co-op up the road and bring it in when they found couldn’t have a drink because there was non on the ward.

I agree, take money from Home Department who are having trouble sqauandering it fast enough. Rice doesn’t need a 20 man SWAT team, nor armoured Landrovers nor, before he demands them, Apache gunships. Will the States ever get over themselves and start providing essential services cost effectively instead of egotrip wasteful spending in all directions?
