Posties put in 13-hour days to deliver Christmas

GUERNSEY POST staff have been working up to 13-hour days to try to ensure all Christmas parcels and cards are delivered by today.

The number of cards being sent has declined by 10% this year but operations director George Jennings said there had been a steep rise in the number of parcels.

‘Once again, due to the increasing trend towards internet shopping, we have seen the number of packets and parcels we deliver increase substantially and this year we expect that growth to be in the region of 30%.’

Bailiwick postal staff have been working extra hours throughout December to make sure packages are delivered in time for Christmas Day.
Many staff have been starting work at 5am to sort out post received from the ferry and planes overnight as well as deliveries that arrive during the day.

Perhaps it would help the Post Office if Christmas could be spread over the whole year. I’ll try and get a few of my cards off in January.

On a 13 hour shift they have about 5 hr of breaks. The most over paid, under worked area of society and the fact that the GP glorifies them doing a little more work amazes me every year. Apart from a bit of sorting (which I understand is mainly automated) it doesn’t take many more hours to pop 6 letters into a mailbox over popping in 2 or 3. Good grief.

Never ceases to amaze me when people like you post drivel like this Max, you are entitled to your opinion but you are so wide of the mark on all of your assumptions.

Max, you obviously have no idea what’s been going at the POST office over the last couple of years. I strongly suggest you talk to a couple of posties and get your facts straight before getting stuck in.

this is really hard work! given the fact that a lot of mailboxes and houses on the island is very difficult to drive and deliver! Respect for the postal workers!

Bet they will be burning the midnight oil again .. the island will have its tax papers popped through their letter boxes very soon.
even if we have six foot of snow these papers get through..
I would like to know who it is that works all night at the main post office as the lights are on nearly all night .or are they left on?
if so what a waste of energy and a lot of light pollution for those living in this area .
