Fishing boat towed in after gear fouls prop

Thursday 29th December 2011, 2:29PM GMT.

James Renier’s day could have been worse. When his gear fouled the prop of his small fishing boat, it was taken in tow by another fishing vessel and the two were escorted into St Peter Port by the relief lifeboat. And when he cleared the net, there was still a dogfish in it. (Picture by Jess Stevenson, 1211969)

NEARLY being blown on to rocks is not an experience that fisherman James Renier wants to repeat.

The 42-year-old, who has been in the business since 1995, was working near Jethou yesterday when his fishing gear got caught around his boat’s propeller.

He tried to free it, but in doing so stalled the engine.

‘I was only 30ft from being blown on the rocks. I tried hauling it [the net] up but the engine stalled and I had to throw the anchor out.’

Luckily, he said, the anchor held.
