LVCR legal bill ‘could run into millions of pounds’

LITIGATION over the decision to end VAT relief for goods shipped from the Channel Islands could end up costing millions of pounds and take years, according to a legal budgeting expert.

London-based costs lawyer Jim Diamond (pictured) has estimated that the trial could last 10 days and cost up to £500,000, if top litigation lawyers were involved.

He also thought the action could drag on for up to five years if the result was appealed.

When asked for a response to Mr Diamond’s comments, a Policy Council spokesman said: ‘While Mr Diamond is an expert in his field, he does himself acknowledge that he has not seen the papers and has no knowledge of the case.’

This is a pathetic attempt by policy council to say ‘we tried’, just ask the law officers ‘in their opinion is this something we have any chance of changing?’
I bet the answer would be no, so why are we even thinking of wasting money on this.

I had reason to see my advocate yesterday and asked what he thought of our chances in this matter. His reply “Not much” but I did not ask any further questions as I suspect the answer would have cost me too much at £450 an hour. However in my opinion I would place his view well above any of the current Crown advocates.
