Minimum price for a unit of alcohol ‘is worth looking into’
Friday 30th December 2011, 2:29PM GMT.
INTRODUCING a minimum price on alcohol is worth considering, Guernsey’s director of public health said yesterday.
Dr Stephen Bridgman (pictured) said there was growing scientific evidence that setting a threshold cost per unit could cut excessive drinking and the associated health and social problems that went with it.
‘I feel it could help people cut down on drinking, particularly in less well-off parts of the community.’
Prime Minister David Cameron is considering bringing in a minimum price per unit of alcohol, according to reports.
The Conservative leader has apparently asked for plans to be drawn up to stop the sale of alcohol below between 40p and 50p a unit in shops and supermarkets. The Scottish government has introduced plans to set a minimum price per unit of 45p.

No, read the proposal carefully. It’s a minimum price requirement, not a tax.
Or to spell it out very simply, it’s a law that prevents a retailer selling alcohol below a set minimum price.

50p a Pint or shot, £1 a round otherwise the kids will do whizz..

More useless social engineering the way tax is on the up it will outstrip that. Cull that position to balance the health budget.

I would like to see the proof. As per usual the government are treating us all like mindless monkeys. Any increase on the cost of alchohol will have a knock on effect re Vat. So in a way it is another way for the government to rake in a little more money -sorry James
We all have choices in life, price rarely comes into it. How many smokers have given up since price increases? I would like to see the stats on that one.
If an individual decides to give up smoking or cut back on drinking that is his/her choice. It just means that we have free will still (I understand that the government would like to stamp that out as well) – how shocking a grown up making his/her own lifestyle choices.
Ok -so I get a little fed up with the so called “health” police telling us as adults whats good/bad for us. So excuse the rant. Before anyone asks Im not a smoker but do enjoy a couple of glasses of vino ( my only vice)
