Bowls champion and former HM Greffier honoured

TWO islanders have been named in this year’s New Year Honours list.

Former HM Greffier Ken Tough said he was honoured to be appointed an OBE for his service in the role and that it was a tribute to the department in which he worked.

Speaking on holiday in Switzerland yesterday, Mr Tough said it had been a surprise to find out, but not a particularly hard secret to keep.

World indoor bowls champion Alison Merrien has been appointed an MBE for services to the sport.

Mrs Merrien learned of the honour two weeks ago and had to keep it a secret until yesterday.  She told only her husband, Ian, who is also a bowls player and is ranked eighth in the world.
