Legionnaires bug found in water supply at PEH

A BACTERIA that can cause Legionnaires’ disease has been detected in the Princess Elizabeth Hospital’s water supply, it emerged yesterday.

Health and Social Services confirmed that an unacceptable level of legionella had been found and said it had begun implementing an action plan to bring down the levels.

The discovery was made during routine checks.

But the department said there was ‘minimal risk’ to patients and staff. So far, no patients or employees have been identified as suffering from any illness that might be linked to the bacteria.

The hosiptal had a visible lack of anti bacteria hand dispensers, and the main one by the door that I used was empty.
In the UK it is much more in your face on entering a hospital to use the hand dispencers and again on entering the area/ward being visited. I was suprised on the low level of visibility of ensuring anti bacteria dispencer had been used before going any further. You always get a few people who do not use it, but to not make it really obvious that it should be used is an oversight. Whilst not directly related to this article it is not like we do not see ward x closed because of bug y being reported here.

It’s just an example of how well maintained the hospital infrastructure is.

It’s also a reminder that anyone with a water tank needs to get their system treated and also soak shower heads in bleach – the two main ways legionella is spread (not through hand hygiene).

Nice of Dr Bridgeman to brief the staff before briefing the press. The first I heard about this was through channelonline.tv, and apparently us nurses are supposed to be on “alert”.

I was visiting a friend in the PEH over Christmas and thought that the general hygene was far better than in the UK and also there were more hand sanitisers and notices to use them.

I believe this desease is mainly caused by the water not being heated to at least 60C,so keep your warm water at home up to that level.
