POLICE have launched a parking ticket blitz on Town disc-zone offenders.

The crackdown on illegal parking saw 75 tickets slapped on windscreens on its first day – costing wrongdoers a total of £2,250.

One 21-year-old Town worker said that on Tuesday there had been a ticket ‘on every other car’ in the Odeon car park, which she used regularly.

Traffic Sergeant John Tostevin said the increased focus on space abuse in the main parking zones and other areas was a response to residents’ complaints.

Have not got a problem with them enforcing the law but, treat everybody the same please, especially in Fountain street where it seems to be used as a permanent car park by one certain establishment.

It is supposed to be a clearway at certain times of the day, but you can get several cars just abandoned there and it does cause chaos.

It must be frustrating for the delivery drivers who cannot find anywhere legal to unload, which then adds to the problem.

£2,250 would be chicken feed if parking without
lights was policed properly throughout the island

the offence isn’t “parked without lights” it is “parked without lights facing oncoming traffic”

the reason for this is due to there being no reflectors on the front of vehicles. Street lighting also makes a difference as to whether there will be tickets issued i’m sure.

And, dare I say it, the police cannot have eyes and ears everywhere, so perhaps if you feel this way, call the police and inform them of the hazard. Only a few days ago, there was someone in the paper having a ticket for parking in the motorcycle bay in st johns road, however it has happened for the past 3 nights! there had been at least 5 tickets per night for the last 3 nights. In my view, they should have been ticketed, but i guess that police have things to deal with which we wont all necessarily know about and we have to accept that they DO have busy periods and cannot get everything done that they wish, same as people working in banks or shops etc

I think you may have been badly informed

Vehicles parked on a road at night must show lights unless parked in a disc zone or approved parking place.Single lights are not allowed.Vehicles must not be parked facing oncoming traffic

The offence of parking without lights could set you back £30 via a ticket whilst parking without lights AND facing oncoming traffic is a double whammy at £60 for two separate offences

Uk law re being near a street light cuts no mustard here I’m afraid. Our 1974 Ordinance is the one that matters

If they want to make an impact of these
illegal parkers they should go to housing estates .
Many are 23 hour parks but many park there for months . some are full of rubbish .they use them like a skip .
makes parking for others very difficult .

they could double that amount of income if they decided to look at the misuse of unloading bays and bus laybys. One only has to drive from the town church up to Frossard house, to count the number of vehicles abusing these places. The areas around the pollet are favourites for any one with a van to park there all day as well.

but , this is an island wide problem and people who live in town who do not have parking cannot expect to have the right to park outside their house for no penalty. It is all well and good moaning that they have no parking, and that it is a problem, well, a lot of people in Guernsey have their own parking,at their own house, but no doubt, their property cost a lot more, without sounding snobbish, but.. you pay your money and get your choice.

The states will never get to implement paid parking until they crack down and stop the misuse of parking areas, such as bus laybys and unloading areas etc, and watching the gradual takeover of island roads and streets by the abandon it anywhere brigade, the battle against illegal parkers has been lost.

What makes them a sad Guernsey jobs worth then Nathan??? They are just doing their job. When the Police recieve a complaint they act upon it and get things done. They can’t be seen to just fob things off. this is when poeple start thinking they’re lazy.

I guess wherever you work nothing gets done quickly. If you even have a job.

They should also crack down on the buses, lorries and cars parking on the pavement across the road ( by the sea access ramp ) opposite the Co-Op at Longstore.

early in the mrning there are buses and cars parked there with drivers running across the road to buy sandwiches at the little shop next to the Co-op.

They park across the cycle lane and the footpath with total disregard for cyclists and pedestrians.

Send a traffic warden down there from 7am in the morning and he would sonn fulfill his daily quota of tickets.

Got to wonder what they were doing before now. I know of people who have left their cars in the odeon, in the same place for over 2 weeks without getting a single ticket and they don’t even live in the area! Its been going on for years. I had been wondering why these people haven’t had tickets as I see traffic wardens in candie road everyday on the way to work. Can they just not be bothered to walk into the odeon?

@11 John, totally agree. Lost count of the amount of times i’ve had to avoid truck doors being opened right in front of me.

Seems that the police are only interested when you complain and are incapable of policing the island on thier own. Then again, when we reported a dangerous/incapable/drunk (take your pick, they couldn’t even stay on thier side of the road passing longstore) driver that we were following along the front this is the response we got: ‘What do you expect us to do about’. Erm I don’t know, pop round thier house and make sure they are not drunk?! You know, your job? Guess all their officers were too busy issuing parking tickets

There are also cars parked opposite la Villette Hotel with no lights on forcing traffic onto the wrong side of the road on a dangerous corner. This has been going on for years.
Another bug bear of mine is the plethora of these vans used for window cleaning, most mornings they are parked on the pavement by the traffic lights opposite the Weighbridge Clock tower and half on/off the pavement or in the bus layby down by Admiral Park, again they interrupt the traffic flow.

Can somebody tell me what you should do if you drive into town for a night out and intend to have a few shandies – can you set your clock for 8am the next day or do you set it for the 7pm at night and then get a ticket when the wardens do an early morning sweep. Is that gonna mean more drink drivers cos they don’t want a ticket??

Walk, get a lift, cycle, taxi or bus into town in the first place?

It also means you don’t need to worry about getting up with a sore head to go get your car and drive home (whilst possibly still over the drink drive limit).
