PETANQUE could be coming to St Peter Port after planning permission for two new courts was submitted.
A piece of land between North Beach and Glategny Esplanade has been earmarked for the project.
The courts are the dream of Dave Bartram, who recently founded the QEII Petanque Club.
The Town Centre Partnership has been involved in the planning.
Executive officer Jack Honeybill said a £1,500 grant from HSBC Securities Services would make the work possible.

Good. Not like that was a particularly attractive piece of land before!

Excellent idea which I’m sure will prove very popular both with the Guernsey public and the visiting tourists.
I’m not sure how vandal proof you can make the proposed area, but it will be a real shame if the area becomes a regular target.
Petanque is a very popular game which can be enjoyed by such a wide range of people of all ages.
Great to see this kind of joint initiative getting started, well done to all involved.

I doubt that vandals would be too interested in a couple of rectangles of sand/gravel. What damage could they do?
It is a great idea.

As long as they don’t miss and hole an unsuspecting boat!!

Would have been far better to put it in front of HMV – total waste of space there.
Good idea but I fear ‘out of sight out of mind’ may be it’s problem.

A great idea but I have to agree with Jeff….. the site is too out of the way. This kind of initiative should be put right into the centre of town, where people will see it. It could add tremendously to the towns atmosphere and will help to make us look continental.
Outside the old markets as Jeff suggests would be a FAR better place for it. I wonder if it is too late to change the venue.

They are trying to set up a lunchtime business leaugue
What better place than 100yards away from the Truchot business centre?

I see what you are saying Ray….. but why make it convenient just for the business community? This could be a benefit for the whole town if it was placed somewhere where there was greater foot-fall, and where people could buy a drink or a coffee to sit down and watch. Valeit says it is windy outside HMV which is a good point, but could something be done to reduce that? What about round the corner outside Joy? And would it be any less draughty at the Weighbridge?
ANother possibility could be the Crown Pier but horror of horrors…. it would mean getting rid of more parking spaces!

Just coz Jersey are doing it!

What great fun breathing in all those lovely vehicle fumes from the busiest, most congested and noisiest area of the island, this is a waste of time and effort, just how many people would actually use this site?
Surely putting courts in one of our parks would make more sense, I’m sure thats where most people would rather spend their leisure time.

What a great idea, its a lovely area, the site outside HMV is very often in the shade and the wind whips around there like nobody’s business. Stick to your guns guys, hope you are lucky.

So you’ve answered your own question then ;-)

This would be suited better to the sunken garden area out the way of traffic and sheltered from the winds . The visitors in the marina would have to listen to this being played by noisy players ..[if any]
A super effort by Jack to do this as it is a popular game .
a few points there I say
