EDUCATION is searching for the best way to implement local management of schools in Guernsey, the department’s new chief officer said yesterday.

LMS was a key feature among Denis Mulkerrin’s recommendations in his review of secondary education and Jon Buckland confirmed that the department was supportive of its principles and was looking to introduce a version appropriate for Guernsey.

‘It’s going to take some looking at because the last thing we want is 25 bursars appointed, adding £1m. on to our wage bill. I don’t like this term, but we need a “Guernsey-fied” system. We need to find a pragmatic solution,’ said Mr Buckland, who took over the running of the department at the beginning of February.

‘Can we get to the same outcome of LMS with a slightly different approach? I do not think that anyone would disagree that the Education Department and its board should not be running 27 schools. That is the general direction we are heading in.’
