16 jobs to go at Anglo Normandy engineering

Anglo Normandy Aero Engineering will shed 16 posts across the 50-strong business, it confirmed this afternoon.

Aurigny Group chief executive officer Malcolm Hart, pictured, said that market forces have forced the company to revise its operations and lower its cost base in face of fierce competition, not least from Eastern Europe.

If no action was taken, Anglo Normandy would lose £500,000 this year.

‘It is important to point out that these redundancies are not indicative of further job cuts across the Group and will not impact on Aurigny’s day-to-day maintenance requirements.’

Just listened to a report on Island FM on this story and it seems after these redundancies Aurigny will need to send aircraft off island for essential safety checks.
Increased competition is given as a driver for these redundancies but seems to be a massive own goal; Make 16 people redundant and send our aircraft to the competitors for their safety checks.
Aurigny should be looking to increase market share and building the business by taking work off their competitors not rolling over and giving it away.

    I agree 100% Da…..
Not only will island owned aircraft be taken all the way to Romania for essential maintenace the aircraft are bound to be maintained to lower standard. This will come as a result of less qualified and trained engineers working on taxpayers aircraft.
How on earth do aurigny expect to fund an empty hanger with no third party work or even working on their own fleet. I’m guessing the next step will be selling of the hanger. Therefore forcing more redundancies.
Is it just me or is this the beginning of the end for the taxpayers airline.
I feel sorry for the employees and the taxpayers who between them have lost so much.

The Hangar was sold to the states years ago, it is rented back from them now so they can’t sell it, Aurigny has been loosing money for years now and Anglo have been providing a very good service. When he offers his resignation years ago when the states took over it was a big mistake by them not to accept it. The states should step in and takeover the running of the Hangar.

I think it’s the slim end of the wedge for the aurigny group, and it’s about time the states took over completely the day to day running of the airline and it’s supporting engineering company. How has the millions of taxpayers money been spent over the years and is anybody answerable to any of it? How do we know it hasn’t been simply frittered away and wasted due to poor management?
I feel sorry for the 16 people who are to lose their jobs and think its a shame that aurigny are prepared to risk having safety checks carried out away from the island, when there’s qualified local staff who can do it here!
I for one will certainly reconsider which airline I fly with in the future. You only have to watch “air crash investigation” to see how dangerous shoddy, cheap maintenance can sometimes be .

I’m confused about were the aircraft are going to be maintained surely if the price is cheaper the the work will be not up to standards? Surley as long as the planes are safe then then cost shouldn’t matte to to much :/

Is the second to none safety record we have had with Aurigny not due to – in Malcoms own words the committed & highly-skilled employees, the very ones that will lose their jobs ?, backward step how can this be allowed ?

    Worried Partner

I have to say being the partner of one of the employees at risk, it is a very worrying time for not just them but there families aswel.

Sending Aircrafts away is a dangerous choice as like it has been pointed out cheaper doesnt mean that it is going to be of the same standards. Al;so when our local boys work on thoses aircrafts they do it knowing their family and friends will be travelling on the same aircrafts, will the foreigner be thinking of the same thing when cutting corners and risking lives.

I am disgusted that we as an island insist on local workers but then send away business as its cheaper. As they are the only ones on the Island also these employees are going to have to find to careers as they cant just move to another air craft engineering company as there isnt one!!!!

Maybe some of the high payroll people should think about cutting the salaries down abit until they find away to fight the competion and win it back

Back chat, I don’t think Malcom hart cared about his committed and highly skilled employees when he made them all redundant at Gill Air in Newcastle in 2001. That was 240 employees out of work , so I doubt it if he’s that bothered about 16 unfortunate people at anglonormandy..

Im not a good flyer at the best of times but this will definitely cross my mind in future when needing to get off island.

Anglo like all businesses lose staff from time to time
As for loosing the best Engineers ages ago that would suggest the remaining Engineers are not so good
As an ex anglo employee I can assure you the remaining staff are highly trained and extremely competent
Why do we continue using outside lobour for our service industries?
No wonder the collage of F.E. are worried about the number of students who wish to take Engineering as a career
