STRICT protected building laws should be relaxed for some properties, National Trust Guernsey president Martin Ozanne has said.

The Environment Department is reviewing its protected building register and is looking for public feedback about the list.

Currently, 1,607 buildings, many in St Peter Port, are protected.

Mr Ozanne, pictured, said the way the list was handled needed to change.

‘There will be many that should have some protection,’ he said.  ‘But I think there are some buildings that are too protected. We don’t want to turn every building into a museum. They need to be allowed to evolve and modernise.’
