Union warns Post over employees’ pension fight

POSTIES will not give up their pensions without a fight, their union has warned following concern expressed by Guernsey Post’s financial director that the current scheme could end up swallowing the utility.

Communications Workers Union senior policy adviser Lionel Sampson said members understood that pension costs had a long-term impact on sustainability and profitability.

But he warned that it did not mean the scheme could be changed or scrapped without agreement from employees.

‘The importance of maintaining a pension-linked salary is a principle that the CWU will not simply sacrifice on the altar for short-term financial profit or because it is a fashionable thing to do within the business and government community,’ he said.

‘Our members’ pensions are an important benefit and we will not simply let them be changed without agreement and proper provision being provided for the future without a fight.’
