Mighty oaks in the making
Saturday 10th November 2012, 10:00AM GMT.
STAFF from the Dominion Group volunteered their services in Herm to help plant oak trees.
Some of the group brought their families along to combine this team-building exercise with a fun day out.
Herm is always open to groups coming over to help. The work gets done quickly, we get great pictures for competition portfolios and everyone has a good time.
The volunteers were helped by Herm gardeners Brett Moore and Rosie Wheeler.
‘We were planting around 50 turkey oaks,’ said assistant gardener Rosie. ‘We had grown the trees from acorns collected around the island, which we have propagated in the nursery for the last three years.’
The plantings took place on the east coast, where original young trees are thriving. In around two years the trees will have grown enough to be spotted from the east coast cliff path.
‘As the saying goes, “Mighty oaks from little acorns grow”,’ said Dominion Group CEO Tim Nelson.
‘We had a fabulous day in Herm planting small trees and let us hope that, over time, we will have played a small part in some mighty oaks of the future. We would particularly like to thank Brett and Rosie, not only for their time but for their considerable experience and enthusiasm in explaining what we were doing and why it was important.’
‘At Dominion we are working hard to build our business and the few short hours we spent on the island were very helpful in bringing our team together. We would be very happy to return and help further in the future. An excellent day for all of us.’
Rosie added: ‘Even though there were some wet feet, the weather held out for us.
‘They seemed to really enjoy themselves – and the lovely views to Brecqhou and Sark.’
