Tourist industry is split about season’s success

TOURISM has endured a ‘tough’ year in 2012 – but the industry cannot seem to agree on how bad things have been.
VisitGuernsey’s presentation on the season and plans for 2013 attracted more than 100 industry representatives yesterday.
Commerce and Employment chief officer Jason Moriarty described 2012 as ‘a tough trading environment plagued by poor weather’.
‘It’s not been a disastrous season but we have seen a decline in visitor numbers,’ he said.
But it was difficult to judge whether the season had met industry expectations, he said. Responses to surveys had been mixed.

Im not an industry representative, but i’d have to say it’s declining. Sark and Herm charge £150 a night and alot of cheaper hotels are closing down like greenacres, so your left with the likes of OGH, Fermain valley that charge alot so cheap places to stay are in decline but there’s still a few nice places like the Abbey court hotel and the pandora. It’s just that you can go to places like Madrid or Budapest for alot less than a weeks holiday in the channel islands.

Come to sunny Guernsey, if you shop around you can still get some decent deals, and if you’re smart about it eating out needn’t cost a fortune either, take advantage of various lunchtime/early bird specials and the cost comes right down.

Is that Irony? If I named any city in the world, would you have a bad thing to say about it. Should we not leave the island and see the world and be deseving of the name donkey?
And im sorry to say im in my 20′s im not going for an early bird special and asking for a jug of tap water like a st martins pensioner!

It’s a bit of a poison chalice this push for school leavers and unemployed to get into the hospitality sector as it’s clearly diminishing in most areas.
Sarnia is quite right, why would anyone really want to come here other than for walking or the history as lets face it our weather has been rubbish for the last few summers and people want guaranteed good weather.
Why there isn’t more investment into things like restoring the bunkers and have that generating tourism like they do in Normandy with beach tours etc I have no idea. People (generally) love war stuff so why not exploit it! We have a couple of really good WW2 museums here as well which I understand do a steady trade so why not look there!

Guernsey will keep chasing away visitors if your airlines insist on charging you more for a missed flight than you originally paid for a complete return ticket. This happened to me earlier this year,I only keep coming back cause I’m from Gu and all my family lives here.Guernsey is still a wonderfull place but I wouln’t come back if I was just visiting,no way!

Let’s be realistic.
1) it is expensive to get here
2) unless you like walking on the cliff paths and going to an abysmal aquarium there really is not much else to do. Not everyone likes WWII monuments.
3) the weather is not exactly Mediterranean.
Guernsey will never draw big tourist numbers as people will go elsewhere to get value for money, especially these days.

It,s all about Price ect
Went on a P&O Cruise this year and Paid less than £1000
Came to St Peter Port on a Damp and Drizzly Day to Find Shop,s ect Closed..
Bus service around the I sland was not Bad…
If we had comefor a Week in june/July with Flights Hotel and Car Hire we would have Paid Double or More + Bad Weather as Usual
P&O All inclusive and had good Weather in the Med

I feel a lot of the blame for Guernsey’s tourism industry decline lies with the Environment Department. From traffic management to architectural planning their decisions have often contributed to the spoilation of Guernsey.

The island has priced itself out of the market, with nothing special to offer tourists that you cannot get anywhere else.
I’ve spent my whole life in Guernsey and love the island, but if you’re a tourist looking to come here it’s a different matter.
All you have to do is look at the other options you have for the cost of getting to and staying in Guernsey. It’s an unfortunate sign of the times.

Just as a matter of how prices increase the year before last our boat to St Malo fell out – we got 40 pounds from the shipping firm refunded.So imagine our surprise when the next year when booking the price had increased by SEVENTY POUNDS!!!!!And thats not all,the next year it increased by a further 50 POUNDS.Now you can fool some of the people all of the time,but you can’t fool all of the people all of the time!We know quite a few who would love to come to Guernsey again,but its just too expensive!
