Poole move costs Condor £1m. in fuel

CONDOR FERRIES has faced £1m. in additional costs because of its unplanned move from Weymouth to Poole, it has been revealed.
The company announced earlier this week that it would return to operating regular sailings from Weymouth next summer, providing that work to repair the damaged harbour wall was complete.
Guernsey director Jan Milner, pictured, said not being able to travel to Poole in the past 12 months had affected the business in a number of ways.
‘Perhaps the most direct consequence of the move has been that we have used more fuel because the journey to Poole is further than Weymouth,’ he said.
‘This has resulted in approximately £1m. in additional costs. Our staff have also been affected and many of those that worked in Weymouth have had to be transported to Poole for the duration of the disruption.

I was hoping they wouldn’t switch back to Weymouth.
Poole is much more convenient with better road links for your onwards journey.
I’ve always been sceptical when they have said they people really wanted to sail to Weymouth. It turns out it’s just much cheaper for them.

And how much have they saved by reducing the speed of the vessels ” to save the wear on the engines”, at least 25%? For us longer sailing times and increased fares so don’t expect any sympathy from most frequent travellers.

Yes, but surely reducing the speed of the vessels would have made them more economical, as it now takes an extra 30 minutes to travel to Poole. I accept fuel costs have risen though. Looks like a large fare increase on the cards?
According to their Summer Timetable, which is available through their website PDF link, it would seem that one of the fast ferries IS being dropped (just like we were told by the Condor Employee a few weeks ago). That certainly isn’t a timetable with two fast ferries on the northern route….. Furthermore, it looks like travellers to and from the islands have secured another great deal in terms of travel times.

I should clarify
An extra 30 minutes to Poole based on their old journey times seen when the catamarans first operated from Poole not as a result of the extra distance travelled.
It now takes as long to get to Weymouth.
All in the interests of fuel economy, which is 100% fair enough.

As an annual visitor to Guernsey, I much prefer Weymouth as the terminal is much easier to find in the dark. Also, the journey is quicker. Roll on the return of Weymouth.
