THE outstanding achievements, bravery and community contributions of young people were last night honoured at the island’s annual youth awards.

A pair of young cadets from St John Ambulance were two of the big winners at the sixth annual Bailiwick of Guernsey Young People’s Awards held at the Princess Royal Centre for the Performing Arts.

The Bobby Le Vasseur Memorial Award for dedicated service went to 18-year-old cadet Chloe Dempsey, while fellow St John cadet Rachel Merrien, 16, was handed The Jan Renouf Memorial Award for outstanding contribution to the community.

Chloe, who has been actively involved in the organisation for the past 12 years, has finished her Leadership 1 and 2 courses, was appointed a Lt-Governor’s cadet and was named St John Ambulance Cadet of the Year. After collecting her award, she said: ‘My heart was pumping. I wasn’t nervous. I was just really excited. I didn’t think it was going to be me at all.

‘I just do what I do because I enjoy doing it.’
