St John self-governing ceremony

Monday 26th November 2012, 10:00AM GMT.

About 520 specially invited guests and dignitaries attended a service at St Stephen’s Church yesterday to see the St John organisation become a self-governing body. While the connection with the Priory of England will remain, the local branch will now get more control of assets and its own leader as part of the new Commandery of the Bailiwick of Guernsey. QUEEN Elizabeth’s cousin, HRH the Duke of Gloucester, was part of a distinguished congregation yesterday which oversaw a ceremony to make the local St John organisation self-governing.

Previously, the local body had been part of the Priory of England and the Islands.

While the connection will remain, the local branch will now get more control of assets and also its own leader as part of the new Commandery of the Bailiwick of Guernsey.

About 520 specially invited guests attended the service at St Stephen’s Church, including Bailiff Richard Collas and the Dean of Guernsey, Paul Mellor, as well His Royal Highness Prince Richard, Duke of Gloucester, who represented the Queen and who is also the Grand Prior of the Order of St John.
