Sweet tale has a happy ending

A FEW years ago, Herm adopted two rescue goats, Sweetpea and Honeybun. The male Anglo-Nubian goats were brothers and loved greeting guests at the gate at the top of the hill.
Unfortunately, Sweetpea became very ill recently and died on 6 November due to complications from a tumour. He is buried in his favourite spot in Monku field.
Islander Jane Makemson looks after the goats and was very upset by the loss of Sweetpea, as she had spent time with ‘her boys’ every day since their arrival on Herm. Like all pets, Sweetpea had become part of the family.
To stop Honeybun from getting too lonely, we have found him a companion. Rosie, a four-year-old female Golden Guernsey, arrived on the island two weeks ago and is coping well with the new situation.
Jane has been enjoying helping Rosie settle into her new home.
For the winter months, they will be kept in a private field next to the Spine Road. Honeybun is very protective of his new little sister and doesn’t want to let anyone near her at the moment.
‘They are still sorting out who is in charge of the field,’ said Jane. ‘I have a feeling it may be Rosie.’
By springtime, the goats will be back in their enclosure at the top of the Drive, so feel free to pop over and say hello.
