Concerns in La Coupee as yet more flats planned

PLANS for a larger development at Coupee Lane, St Peter Port, have been submitted to Environment Department, but neighbours are once again concerned about the impact it could have on the area.
An application for 10 flats on the small site close to Cornet Street was approved in 2011, despite residents’ objections.
But construction work never began and the developer, Coupee Lane Ltd, has now applied for an even larger development with 17 flats.
The extra space has been acquired after the developer bought two properties bordering the site – La Recherche on Cliff Street and a cottage to the west – and has proposed knocking them down.
That would leave enough room for 14 basement parking spaces and three outside spaces, as well as 13 two-bed flats, three one-bed flats and a three-bed flat spread over four floors.

Its amazing what gets approved these days, if you look around the Island at the small houses that have been sold recently only to be knocked down & replaced by something much larger & totally different, of course not the sort of thing that an average person could afford or want,
just makes you wonder if money can buy not just the building but also the permission to build!

Reading through an old stack of local papers I see the derelict cottage sold for £85k in Coupee Lane. That is cheap just for a plot potential alone I would think.

The trouble began in the early 70s when the offices wre bulit. Look in Guernsey Days Gone By book for a nice photo of what a lovely little lane there used to be there, and it had historical importance as part of the old defensive ditch system of the old town. Since the 70s development this area has looked awful. About time something was done. Not sure of proposal but at the moment it is an eyesore. So I blame the original IDC decision to allow the offices there and to leave it half done.

Yet more tiny “living” spaces available to buy/rent for massively inflated prices.
No way should 17 flats be built on plot of land this size, but this is Guernsey after all.
