New Year’s Eve escape not plain sailing for all

PASSENGERS headed to Guernsey Airport at the weekend armed with their tickets to New Year’s Eve celebrations around Europe.
Family and friends eagerly queued at the check-in on Saturday and yesterday ahead of their big off-island plans.
But for some passengers who had been holidaying in Guernsey, it was their last-ditch chance to get back to the UK in time for New Year’s Eve, after fast ferry services were cancelled due to stormy weather.
Elisabeth Tomlinson, 52, was flying to Southampton to see her sister for New Year’s Eve. Her husband, Howard, could not get a seat on the plane, so was hoping to take the Bumblebee ferry back in time for the celebrations. They were among those affected by the ferry cancellations.
‘I’m just going to have a very large brandy at my sister’s house if I ever get there,’ said Mrs Tomlinson. ‘I don’t care about partying. I just want a brandy and to be on the mainland.’
