UNDERSEA cable links will play a vital part in the future of the island’s energy supply, Guernsey Electricity has said.

It follows support for a second cable to France from the Renewable Energy Team as the first step in a ‘logical sequence’ for energy development in the island.

GE managing director Alan Bates, pictured, said the utility had been assisting the team in producing its strategy, which in turn had given it more clarity on the States’ thinking towards large-scale renewables locally.

‘The RET has once again stressed the vital importance of more undersea cable links to ensure security of supply to the island,’ he said.

‘Combined with this security, we also need to increase the import capacity available to Guernsey to give access to imported low-carbon and renewable energy today.’
