GUERNSEY’S Jessops shop shut yesterday with the loss of five jobs after the administrators announced that all the company’s branches were being closed.

The photography business went into administration on Wednesday, although the shops continued trading.

But at 4.25pm yesterday administrator PwC announced that all shops would close at the end of business.

Joint administrator Rob Hunt said they had reviewed the position of the business and held discussions with suppliers.

‘It is apparent that we cannot continue to trade and, as a result, we have had to make the difficult decision to begin the closure of all 187 Jessops stores at the close of business today [Friday],’ he said.

For some reason, the phrase ‘with the loss of X jobs’ just doesn’t wash on this scale. If it were 200 or a thousand, it’d sound impressive.

I’m sure the high street will cope.

Davis – on paper yes I see where you’re coming from, particularly when you read the UK news. Don’t forget though it’s Guernsey we’re talking about here, everything is on a much smaller scale.

If you look at the bigger picture, Guernsey has a small retail economy under increased pressure. If 10 businesses like Jessops employing 5 staff each closed in the next few months, that 5 would quickly becomes 50 – a 10% rise in unemployment.

Can you imagine what would happen in the UK if the government announced a 10% rise in unemployment?

What a selfish and stupid remark. It may only be five people but for those five and their families it is a black day.

Oddly enough, I don’t think that many people expect to be “impressed” by reports of job losses. Whether the High street can cope is not the issue. The issue is that 5 people have lost their jobs.

When you read reports of car crashes, are you equally disappointed if no-one is killed or seriously injured?

A very thoughtless post, five people have lost their livelyhood overnight, and that is no small measure. Retailers are struggling and staff trained in retail skills will I suspect have difficulty in obtaining re-employment in this field.

Sorry to see Jessops go, the staff were helpful and willing to assist when we needed help with cameras etc.
One of the few places which still stocked ancient films and batteries, now its Ebay or bust.
