Electricity aims for clarity on pricings

TREASURY and Resources is working with Guernsey Electricity to find a way to compare the utility’s performance to other jurisdictions, the department has confirmed.

It follows two reports on electricity prices from the Channel Islands Competition Regulatory Authority and research firm Island Analysis, the first of which showed GE was a third more expensive than Jersey and the second that GE was the second most expensive out of 14 island jurisdictions.

But the department echoed questions that were raised by the utility about the accuracy of the CICRA report.

‘The department was surprised that CICRA did not provide Guernsey Electricity with an opportunity to comment on the draft of its report before it was finalised so that the company could assist in verifying some of the information within it,’ a spokesman said.

Electricity is expensive over here but the way i see it is GE have to upgrade with more Generators to cope with larger loads mainly due to the ever increasing population of the island, and these projects are not cheap. And do you remember when you could fill your car up for £5.00 and now it costs close to £40.00 yes the price of fuel is very expensive so running these massive engines must cost a fortune.

Is it not States of Guernsey owns ships who bring the oil in?
Not sure electric a ripoff, remember a few years ago our dear States refused them any increase whatever

But the large cost increase is difficult for several of us to cope with now! Sort of using low tariff now so night is day and day is sleep time

With GE being government owned, if they lower their prices they’ll deliver a lower divident to the government. Guess what happens if that occurs? Yup, taxes have to go up somewhere else.
