‘Unacceptable’ to cancel operations

A NURSES union representative has branded Health and Social Services’ decision to cancel 40 operations as ‘unacceptable’.

Royal College of Nursing regional officer Lindsay Meeks hit out after the Medical Specialist Group revealed the level of cancellations in December and January.

The department closed De Sausmarez and Divette wards and cancelled operations in an attempt to cap its £2.5m overspend.

Mrs Meeks, pictured, who travelled to the island to meet members over the closures, acknowledged that efficiencies had to be made.

‘But cancelling operations is not acceptable,’ she said.

Why not … If it is not an urgent operation why is it not acceptable to change this to another time?
