IT was a cold, early start for the team installing the first of St Peter Port Harbour’s much-anticipated new cranes on Saturday.

Work to offload the 240-tonne Gottwald-manufactured unit began at around 3am and it was in place on the quay just over two hours later.

It was the first of two new cranes and arrived from Southampton last week almost fully constructed on board the Terra Marique, the same barge which was used to deliver Guernsey Electricity’s generator.

In the early hours of Saturday, a team of staff from the barge and the harbour moved the specialist vessel into position at number five berth before removing the crane.

For the huge money it cost it certainly is an ugly looking thing. And I’m sure it won’t last half the length of time the old and still working cranes did.

Wow, thanks for the incredibly in depth comment backed by facts and figures; I’m surprised the Harbours Authority didn’t ask for your advice when looking for a replacement for their ‘old and still working cranes’, you could have saved all of us other taxpayers an absolute mint!

By the way, how much did this crane cost and how much could you have got us one for?

I think they were looking for something functional as opposed to attractive. Do you think maybe they’d have been better off buying a pretty water feature. That way it would look pretty and they could continue using the old cranes until they fail. Let’s just hope they don’t fail whilst carrying a heavy load.

Perhaps they could test the loading by craning Mr Rices armoured land rover up and into an awaiting barge which could then be ceremoniously saled into the little Russell and sank- would make a fine wreck for fishing and at least would end up being productive.
