Food price review welcomed by supermarkets and shoppers

SUPERMARKETS yesterday defended Guernsey’s grocery prices ahead of an island-wide review by the regulator.
Stores welcomed the investigation by the Channel Island Competition and Regulatory Authorities, but insisted there were a number of factors that impacted on Guernsey’s prices, such as the higher cost of freight, labour and rent.
Customers were also keen to hear the results of Guernsey’s comparison to other jurisdictions such as Jersey and the UK.
Cicra will launch the price probe later this month and Guernsey supermarkets were keen to remind customers of the extra costs they incurred.

Rents have always been one of the biggest rip offs on the Island,and freight costs always used as the excuse for some of the exorbitant prices charged in these Islands.The competition and Regulatory Authority need to visit Morisons super markert in Gibraltar,to determine why it is that stuck right down there on the south tip of Spain ,prices are the same and sometimes cheaper than in Morisons in the uk,and most of the stock for that supermarket …is taken down by trucks everyweek,a far greater distance from uk to Gibraltar,than uk to the channel Islands.
Of course,also the question of competition,Choice of supermarkets ,and the fact that these Islands are a captive market are other factors .Sadly here we do not have the luxury of the fantastic supermarkets and shops found in Europe or the Uk with all their Bargain prices and incredible choices,and i for one will not apologise for the fact that i do most of my shopping off the Island whenever possible.
In comparison to Jersey ,here we are now pretty feeble when it comes to producing our own food stuffs unlike in years gone by,prefering instead it would seem to import nearly everything,it’s more convenient that way and of course You don’t have to Get your hands dirty in a field digging up the veg.So until that and many other factors change,be prepared to pay through the nose in our Islands.
