Why do we need postal regulator?

SCRAPPING formal postal regulation entirely should be looked at, Guernsey Post chief executive Boley Smillie has said.
The Channel Island Competition and Regulatory Authorities has cut the utility’s annual licence fee from £180,000 to £90,000 and is consulting on plans to abolish price controls and instead focus on the quality of the service provided.
Mr Smillie, pictured, said the fee was paid in monthly instalments and the company would benefit from the change from the start of next month.
‘It is a step in the right direction,’ he said.
But he was keen to see the regulator go further and no longer be under Cicra’s mandate.

I cannot understand why we are so concerned at the cost of postage that we have to regulate the industry at such enormous cost. How many letters or cards do we each post in a year? In my case, probably less than a hundred and half of them Christmas cards. Do I care if it costs 39 pence or 49 pence per stamp? Twenty years ago people did use the post service far more frequently as e’mail was not as reliable and easily available as it is today. The cost in those days was a factor that had to be considered but today? I doubt it.
