Mallard to get 3D films on two screens
Saturday 16th February 2013, 4:00PM GMT.
Mallard Cinema projectionist Colin Le Marquand, 72, who has worked at The Mallard since day one, said getting new equipment, able to screen 3D films, was an exciting development. (Picture by Adrian Miller, 1304567)
CINEMA fans could soon get to watch 3D films at the Mallard, after its director confirmed that it was ‘committed’ to installing the technology.
The Mallard Complex’s David Brown said 3D would be brought in following the installation of an all-new Sony digital cinema system.
He said the Mallard would be the first in the UK to have Sony’s new equipment.
It will close for two weeks from 4 March to make the changes and 3D could be not far behind.
Mr Brown said the Mallard group had taken the decision to install the very latest technology but as of now Sony had not yet released its 3D system.

Who cares? The screens are still too small and the seating isn’t tiered, those are the issues that need to be addressed, I doubt the system they are buying is going to be any good, the throw distance and screen sizes at the mallard would require different technology to the decent cinemas everywhere else.
Personally what I want from a cinema here is
Decent sized comfortable tiered seating, a large screen size, and a better sound system, 3D then would be nice.
But I get all this at home, the only thing the mallard has to offer is the ability to see something first, I can wait.

Perhaps all your wishes will come true when they build the new cinema at Admiral Park
They WILL build a new cinema at Admiral Park won’t they?

There are far more fundamental problems that have to be addressed with the Mallard cinemas, and they’re not to do with the projection methods.
The bass is terrible, the cinemas themselves are VERY badly sound-proofed and the screens now are barely any larger than something I could re-create at home.
The Mallard needs to raise its game from the bottom up instead of faffing with fancy gimmicks like 3D.

a couple of things about the Mallard – firstly, at least we have a private cinema in Guernsey – if it wasnt for the Mallard there wouldnt be a cinema! Secondly, its a shame alot of films which can be shown in 3d arent so great that they are looking at upgrading. Thirdly, half term last week – no U films on show – that was disappointing! And lastly going to the ‘pictures’ ‘flicks’ ‘fleapit’ used to be an ‘outing’ ie you could spend a whole afternoon or a whole evening there so was a good social scenario. Unfortunately now you just go to see one film, normally with no breaks, so all over and done with in 90 or 120 minutes with films being shown at weird times … 4.15 ?? However, as I said, at least we do have the Mallard!

@Joshua – you have tiered seating at home? Impressive! Joking apart the tiered seating is one of the biggest issues, the catering is another. When the Mallard cinema first started you could buy nice hot dogs etc, but then it all stopped and what we are left with is, quite frankly, naff.

Have you spoken to the Mallard about this? If so what did they say?

And hot dogs aren’t naff?

Bit late 3D is old Tech there seems to be a shift into other systems now. Some films are not bothering to even shoot in 3D like Skyfall.
3D has always been one of those things that pops up every few years makes a few quid then disappears again.

and they don’t show all the latest films, Django Unchained being the latest example …

For the size of Island we are, we do get a very good range of films. People in part of the UK, get films showing on more than one screen, and have only children’s films in the holidays.

I think the new projectors will be able to handle films shot in HFR – 48 frames a second, and maybe 60FPS too.
I did some digging on the Sony site and it says that their new 4K projectors can handle both of these.
And the story in the Press does say the Mallard is getting ‘the very latest in digital cinema technology’.
I wonder if they’ll bring back The Hobbit to show off the new projectors once they’re installed?

Yours is possibly the only post worth reading. I hope they are 4k too, if its better than what we currently have then why are people moaning?

The Mallard has confirmed that the new projectors will ultimately be able to screen films in HFR 3D. There’s no decision on whether or not they’ll bring The Hobbit back, though.

So instead of having aproximatly 1000 pixels cut off by peoples heads i’ll have about 4000 pixels cut off by peoples heads, yey.
4k Is only really worth it when projected at larger sizes, the malard could project 1080 and I wouldn’t be able to make out the difference at the average seating distance as the pixel density would be so great given the screen size.
And I don’t welcome HFR, cinema should be 21fps, it’s what everyone is used to, HFR just looks bizare and unnatural.
Forgive me for thinking they’ll get the very latest in top of the range home cinema projection, instead of the very latest in top of the range commercial grade cinema projection.

Standard frame rate is 24FPS not 21… Also 4k no matter the screen size will look immensely better than 1080p, plus it’s not all about the pixel resolution, a new projector would have truer colour accuracy and richer tonal spectrum so the picture quality will be far better than the current one.
agreed HFR looks bad but it’s nice to know they will be able screen it. any change to that cinema will be for the better. it could hardly get any worse.
cannot wait for the day that films are released online at the same time so you have the choice to watch them at home or at the cinema. not everybody enjoys the so called “cinema experience”

Is this really the response?
A local company is investing many thousands of pounds into providing a better product and people are moaning about the lack of hotdogs?
This is great news for film fans, embrace it and more investment will follow.

This would definitely be a valuable asset for film fans, but what proportion of the population comprises of film afiocionados ? Isn’t it better to focus on providing actual needs for the community, rather than satisfying the desires (not what they are in desperate need of) of a relatively small minority, such as cultivating local produce or creating further social housing (though I believe that the latter ought to be the second priority) ? I have a passionate interest in subjects such as history and the environment, yet I am quite content with current resources such as the plethora of books in the local libraries and the Sixth Form library and substantial knowledge can be derived from places such as Castle Cornet. Additionally, natural aspects of the landscape are adequate for environmental investigations such as ascertaining the species diversity of sand dunes and analysing natural succession in plant communities- I don’t demand the construction of further wildlife centres.

I agree with your sentiment, but it’s hardly a better product.
More like the same old product in a shiny new box. They need to address the elephant in the room.

I think everyone should get an perspective on the whole thing, Yes The Mallard & its Jersey owners are investing 10′s of thousands of pounds with changing to Digital Projectors which are not cheap when your buying 4 of them.
Plus with the added costs of buying new Cinema screens for the downstairs cinemas to allow the showing of 3D films and all the new tech they are installing as well the whole package of improvments they are doing is going to be costing a lot of money.
True I agree that the sightlines are bad in most of the cinemas when Ive been watching a film in the past at the Mallard plus the seats are not the best quality ones I agree.
And yes everyone would love to have tiered seating in the cinema but when your working within an converted building you are constrained by the existing building design.
I guess what im saying is that one should appreactite that Guernsey has actually had a cinema for the last 20 odd years showing most of the films on their release date as if not for the Mallard one would not have had the option of watching the latest releases at the cinema. And Guernsey would have been worse off without the Mallard.
I also agree that the sooner a new purpose built cinema is built the better as long as it is built properly with at least 4-6 screens with total seating for at least 400-450 as any less than this wouldnt make sense and wouldnt be profitable.
Yours
Filmnut
