HUGE potholes at Bordeaux car park have been filled in but users have called for a longer-term solution to stop them from reappearing.
States Works employees were yesterday digging up the car park and re-laying the ground in the popular area.
However, many users of the site were sceptical about how long the new smooth car park would last.
Woodies kiosk assistant Katrina Raubiska said it was good that something was being done but she was not convinced that it would stop the potholes from reappearing.

It’s not just this car park that needs repairng properly, its all of Guernsey roads. They are in a shocking state and certainly not fit for purpose. From a H & S point of view motor cycle and scooter riders are being placed into harms way by potholes and poor road surfaces!

When it is less than one and a half inches deep.
Its nice we can cruise into bordeaux carpark again to taste our favourite cuppa latte.

Mon dieu!,here we go again…another fine example of states cost cutting, and how not to do something properly!…done in the usual amateur way, of going about things,which will end up (gauranteed),reverting back as it was before,yes like the Somme…Quelle perte du temps..

Coastal car parks are a great example of the kind public “infrastructure” that suffers when States’ departments are not allocated appropriate funds to maintain the real estate that they are responsible for.
Perhaps, the Environment Department should simply publish the figures to tarmac over every coastal car park, and the cost to “resurface” using the salvaged aggregate that is currently used and let the public do the sums.
If this island wants to have pristine surfaces around the coast, then the States need to allocate substantial funds. The current repair as cheaply as we can model will go on, as long as the States continues to expect Environment and other departments to “make do and mend”… Not convinced that the millions required will fit with the FTP, but car parks, along with coastal defences are the ongoing examples of stuff that people always want sorted, but without the political support and focus that they deserve.
Perhaps, it might also be worth considering restricting access to certain car parks, in order that particularly large vehicles cannot access them? Witness, the Pulias car park about a month ago, after the surface was repaired, and a HGV turning in and tearing up the surface 20 minutes after the work was completed.

I completely agree with your points. The ‘public’ moan when there are potholes, then moan when they are repaired.. and anyone who wants tarmac in every public car park in the island needs their ‘bumps felt’. Yes tarmac is a practical surface and does last longer than more natural materials than gravel etc, but excatly who is going to pay for it and do we really want to lose valuable natural beauty just because its a bit bumpy here and there?
It has already been previously explained at some length that there simply isn’t enough money in the ‘pot’ for more permanent remedies, so whinging about a few bumps won’t make the cash magically appear.
The population of Guernsey had better get used to a lot more tightening of the State’s purse strings, ‘cos believe me, its going to get a lot worse before we get back to the ‘good old days’!

Islander, I agree that this type of project would be beneficial to the community in the wider sense, but even with the labour element being essentially ‘free’ the material would still remain an expense and would the ‘finish’ be up to the job if no mechanical regrading and compacting was employed.
The nett result would I’m afraid be the potholes appearing in an even shorter time and the inevitable moaning that accompanies it.
Certainly though where the community service system could be used to good effect, I for one would support it.
