THE families of cyclists Peter Root and Mary Thompson, who died in a road crash in Thailand last week, have come together to acknowledge the flood of tributes that have poured in.

And an exclusive interview with the Guernsey Press came at the same time as reports that Thai tourism chiefs had apologised for the tragedy. News also broke that a film festival will pay tribute to the couple’s story.

Miss Thompson’s mother and brother have flown over from Bristol to Guernsey to be united with Mr Root’s family and this week moving accolades to the pair continue to appear on blogs and networking sites around the world.

Speaking while surrounded by members of both families, his father, Jerry, said they had been touched by the many comments and outpouring of support.

My husband and I send our deepest sympathies and prayers to the families of Peter and Mary. They were incredible ambassadors to a world I could only see through eyes of such documenters as they were. I loved watching their videos and they never complained, even Mary, when she had spent a harrowing ride vomitting in the heat. I loved to watch the way interacted with the people, especially, the children, they met on their travels. Our world needs a whole lot more Pete’s and Mary’s in it.

I never met, or even corresponded, with Peter and Mary but very much enjoyed following their trip on their online blog and wishing I was doing what they were. It was such a shock to find out how it ended so abruptly.
Is there a memorial fund I can contribute to?
