St John officer saved woman with response to ‘just another 999 call’
Thursday 7th March 2013, 4:00PM GMT.
ANSWERING ‘just another’ 999 call saw station officer Jason Garnham, 41, rewarded for his communication skills at the St John Ambulance and Rescue Service’s annual awards evening.
The awards, now in their fifth year, brought together staff from across the services St John provides to be recognised for their actions during 2012.
Mr Garnham received the Chief Officer’s Recognition of Performance Award because of his response to a 999 call from an elderly woman in Alderney.
‘As station officer we provide cover in control for the other islands. I took a call and it was from a distraught lady who was very confused. After spending time with her on the phone I was able to establish she was in quite a precarious position on the cliffs.
‘It was early in the morning and pitch-black, she did not know where she was. In this situation I had to think dynamically and why she was acting like that. As it was cold I was thinking she might have hypothermia. Just by spending a little bit of time on the phone with her I was able to get as much information as I could.’
