PARENTS have rejoiced at a decision by Queens Road Medical Practice to scrap the £100 charge for newborn baby examinations carried out by its GPs.
The practice, which also has responsibility for the Longfrie Surgery, confirmed the checks – performed at the Princess Elizabeth Hospital just after birth or in the surgery a day or so after discharge – would now be free.
‘It was felt it would make life easier for families at an already expensive time,’ practice manager Chris Wakefield said.
News of Queens Road Medical Practice’s decision broke on the Guernseymums.gg Facebook page – a support group that has actively campaigned against the fee along with the Maternity Services Liaison Committee. Around 80 people ‘liked’ the post and 24 women commented, speaking of their delight.

This should have been done years ago. Hopefully others will follow suit.
Watch other fees rise to compensate though :/

If they’re signing up a new patient, they’ll have plenty of opportunity to recoup the cost at a later date, so it must be good business practice as well.

Has anyone else noticed that this happened just before the paediatrician at Queens Road retires and stops making money out of it, or am I just being cynical.
Whatever the reason behind this decision it is great news for parents and not a moment too soon.

Fair play to GuernseyMums….however it would be nice just once if the media also got feedback from fathers on parental issues.
Fatherhood is desperately in need of some recognition and positive coverage. We’re not just walking sperm donors.
