Newsroom Live – 12 March, 2013

As the island remains in the grip of snow and high winds today our reporters will be out and about finding out how different areas have been affected and how people are coping with the conditions.

We’ll be keeping in touch with the airport, bus service and harbours as all forms of transport have been severely hit by the blizzard, as well as watching the roads to see how those islanders who have taken to their vehicles are getting on.

As schools remain closed we’ll be looking to see if any youngsters decide to enjoy the conditions rather than remain indoors, as well as keeping an eye open for any other photo opportunities.

If you’ve got photos from today or yesterday that you’d like to share, please email them to newsroom@guernsey-press.com.

Unsurprisingly, sporting fixtures have been hit by the weather, too.

It’s not expected that tonight’s Priaulx League matches will take place, and our sports department anticipates that the netball games scheduled for today will also be cancelled.

Guernsey FC’s away match tonight has already been postponed.

Tomorrow’s sports page will, however, have a story on a disappointing day for Guernsey bowls ace Alison Merrien, who lost her British Indoor Championship title in the first round of this year’s competition at the weekend.

There’ll also be a report on Sunday’s autocross and on the Guernsey Snooker Open final between Martyn Desperques and Adam Shorto.

Can I just say a big well done to the civil defence volunteers who have helped so many people continue with their journeys and helped people stay safe over the last few days, seeing them on my walk home lending a hand to drivers who weren’t coping with the conditions, giving them a push here and there and trying to stop them sliding into trouble. I was walking home and grateful they were there in support.
