Kerbside trials set for three bigger parishes

The Vale douzaine wants to opt out of the kerbside scheme.

ST SAMPSON’S, St Peter Port and St Martin’s will be the first parishes to see kerbside recycling, douzaines have been told.

Constables spoken to by the Guernsey Press said officials left a  meeting last night with Public Services a lot happier and a lot clearer about the direction of the waste strategy.

There had been some concern from douzaines about a lack of detail over the impact and cost of kerbside recycling.

Forest senior constable Pierre Paul said trialling the collection schemes in the three parishes at the end of the year made sense.

‘It seems like the right way to do things – those are the most densely populated parishes and it means you’re not having to

have negotiations with all the parishes,’ he said.

I think this idea is a total waste of money! We already have a very wide spread of sites for recycling, and all kerb-side recycling will do is provide more opportunities for seagulls and the elements to spread rubbish.

What about the elderly lady living in a flat and without access to a car, or the single mum with a baby and no car, or the disabled person?

Lugging bags of rubbish to recycling sites might be easy for you, but that doesn’t mean it’s easy for everyone.

I think you’ll find that you’re supposed to clean recylcables. Gulls look for food when they trash bing bags.

I live in SPP and think this is a great idea – I can’t wait.

A lot of SPP residents, like myself, don’t have parking, and many don’t bother with a car. Even if you do have a car, it might be parked quite far away, which makes the idea of lugging a load of heavy recycling to the car, to then drive to a recycling site quite off-putting.

I’m ashamed to say it, but bringing in kerbside recycling will dramatically increase the amount that I recycle.

We’ve had recycling sites for a while and the recycling rate has plateaued. This is the only way we are going to increase the percentage of homes that recycle, because some people will not make the effort to get their stuff to a recycling site. Cost is the main issue and I’d like to know the impact it could have on the rates.

Leave things as they are. There are many recycling banks in these parishes that people enjoy visiting and chatting with friends. Its become part of the community spirit and the exercise.

More Education is needed for those who dont`t care of our islands refuse problems approaching.

Place more bring banks into St Peter Port[inner] for non car users for example Trinity Square,Market Street. Also all housing estates.

I am sure this would increase another 20% saving from dumping into Mont Cuer landfill.

Totally agree. More bring banks – no kerbside recycling. If kerbside had gone to an ISLAND WIDE vote the majority would have voted against. Why do we let a minority make our decisions?

Surely the cost will be covered by the reduced need for conventional rubbish collection and a reduced parish rate?

All shops with over 1,000 sq.ft. of floor space, should be required to install near the entrance ,a recycling bin or bins ,then, regular shoppers whether they be single mums or the elderly could return their ‘empties’ when they next shop. If done on a regular basis, they would avoid the problem of having to carry large and heavy bags for recycling.

I agree. In particular, I think that the supermarkets could have collection bins for all the plastics (including black plastics) that they bring into the island and if they want to send any of it down to Mont Cuet, they could pay the appropriate charges for doing so. That would get them to focus their minds pretty sharpish on their packaging policies.

Why not copy the US format. Supply different coloured bins for the main types of recycling free of charge to each household.
