Night buses great for trade, say pubs

PUBLICANS are thrilled at the prospect of bus services running late into the night being introduced if islanders agree to the operator’s proposed changes.

They believed the island had been ‘crying out’ for night buses on Friday and Saturday evenings and were hopeful it could help their businesses.

CT Plus announced a huge overhaul of bus routes yesterday, which also includes scrapping the round-island number 7 route in favour of a less frequent visitor-focused service and a direct link between the airport and the Bridge.

Blind O’Reilly’s licensee Cyril Dunne, pictured, said it was one of the best ideas he had heard.

Randalls Brewery managing director Ian Rogers said the changes would be beneficial to both pubs and customers.

How long will they run before they have to be stopped due to drunken behaviour, vandalism on the buses or threats to the drivers by the inebriated clientele?

If they can work successfully in major cities around the world, with much higher crime rates, there is no reason to take such a pessimistic view here.

What a ridiculously pessimistic thing to say. You don’t know how lucky you are to live on this island. Like Terry Langois says it works all over the world for goodness sake.

The busses all have CCTV. If the authorities warn everyone beforehand that the crimes you mention will be met with a permanent ban from busses. The thought of only being able to use the expensive taxis will make them think twice.

They can’t run a reliable day service let alone a Night one. 2013 year of the guernsey shambles

I don’t trust these creeps. I expect they are just sweetening the pill of higher fares and worse routes with the promise of night buses. A few months down the line they will cancel them saying they get used by drunks, their drivers get abused, people puke on board etc. etc. Voila, worse service ever and higher profits for them.

It’s something the majority want…..so those that abuse it should be banned from it….simples.

Being on the late buses great idea, we will not have to pick the drunks up, just put them on the bus, great idea.
Seriously I think late buses at weekends are a great idea, anything that will bring life back into the town of a night is worth a go, but if they are granted a licence, they should be made to run it correctly not last the last outfit, by that I mean busy nights and the quite nights, that is the only way that trade will be built up.

It would advantage restaurants and late opening shops too! With several bus companies it worked very well for years. As I recall, the last buses at night were for the cinema goers. I think it could be a good thing again but I take the point about hooligans and drunkards – In the past there was a dearth of hooligans but there was the occasional drunkard who was roughly dragged off to the cells for the night if he got violent.
Yes, I say give the idea a good chance and don’t let slobs spoil it for you!
